J.K. Rowling’s daughter is quoted to have said “everyone should want to be a Hufflepuff“, and of course they also lay claim to one of the coolest people too…

I too think everyone should want to be a Hufflepuff! For one, their common room is right next to the kitchen. To me, this reads as an endless supply of late night snacks. And what more of a fantastic late night hot drink than a “Hufflepuff Hot Buttered Caramel”. Buttery, sweet, caramelly, spiced, appley goodness in a mug, topped with a mountain of salted caramel whipped cream. A fitting drink for a Hufflepuff! All other houses can go sit in their chilly dungeon or tower common rooms and remain hot-drink-less.
Hufflepuff students tend to be modest. They enjoy the good things in life – the Wizarding World’s house of “hygge”. They value patience, hard work, and loyalty. All these traits I’ve attempted to capture in this drink (well maybe not modesty, there’s nothing modest about that cream), plus making something super delicious dedicated to my Hufflepuff friends who I know would love to drink this. My original taste test with my very own Hufflepuff was heavy on rum and vodka – so this is much more scaled back (in fact, no alcohol necessary at all). This final version is much more like a warm, toasty nap under a blanket. Hufflepuffs like naps.
Another fantastic thing about this drink is that it can be made alcoholic, or kept non-alcoholic. Normally in this case I’d make two separate posts – but for an identical drink with one ingredient difference, it didn’t seem necessary. You can enjoy them both here.
What follows is the non-alcoholic recipe, but I’ll tell you where to “spike it” in order to make this a hard hot caramel. Skip to the end of the page for the recipe.
The most important two parts of this recipe is getting the cream right, and getting the caramel elixir deliciously combined and heated too. If you wish to pass up on the cream, any shop-bought squirt-y cream will do just as well, and some of the photographs on this page are topped up with such a cream to produce a spectacular head! See the photograph below for example!
Another option with the cream is whilst whipping it, you could fold in a shot of salted caramel vodka instead of caramel syrup. Don’t forget to top with Hufflepuff coloured sprinkles whatever you do! Hufflepuffs love sprinkles!
Hufflepuff Hot Buttered Caramel
For the Cream
- 150 ml Double Cream
- 1 tsp Caramel Syrup
For the Drink
- 15 g Butter
- 25 g Brown Sugar
- 5 g Grated Nutmeg
- 100 ml Water
- 400 ml Apple Juice
- 60 ml Salted Caramel Vodka OPTIONAL
- Gold and Brown Sprinkles
Mix together your double cream and caramel syrup and whisk thoroughly till it holds its shape. When ready to use for drink, put in a piping bag.
In a pan, combine the water, sugar, nutmeg and butter until completely melted and leave to simmer on a small heat for 5-10 minutes. If you prefer an extra sweet drink, add a splash of caramel syrup.
Add the apple juice, mix thoroughly and allow to heat up. Once at optimal drinking temperature, take off the heat, and pour into your mug.
[OPTIONAL] add a double shot (or 60ml) of salted caramel vodka.
Top with your whipped cream mix, piping gently through a piping bag. If preferred, feel free to use standard, store bought squirt-y cream. Top with sprinkles.
